Difficulty Level: Easy (with supervision near the falls). Flat walk to the torrent but navigating down to the lower falls can be more challenging, little ones will require hand-holding and a watchful eye
Age Suitability: Ages 4+ (best for sturdy walkers!)
Toddler Tips: Not suitable for pushchairs. Use baby carriers with caution; the trail can be slippery.
Trail Details and What to Expect
Once you’ve parked along the roadside, look for the signpost marked “Santa Maria 2h 40min” (don’t worry—you won’t be going nearly that far!). Climb over the turnstile to start the trail, which follows a gentle path through a meadow towards the torrent. After about 20–30 minutes, you’ll reach a metal turnstile, and from there, the water play begins as you hop over the stream into the forest.
The descent to the waterfall meanders through the trees and, recent weather dependent, you may encounter a few fallen branches on your path. Whether you arrive at the base of the falls to a small trickle or a full cascade, the waterfall and natural pools are a beautiful sight, and the meaning of its name ‘leap of joy’ feels just right. Enjoy playtime at the pools before heading back along the same path.
There are no facilities on the trail, so come prepared. After your hike, stop in Orient village for a hearty meal at one of the cozy restaurants.
