November marks the end of the olive harvest season, so we’re heading inland for a mountain-side picnic among the olive groves.
As the weather cools, we’re swapping beach bags for backpacks and baskets. Some weekends it’s a full-day hike, other times it’s simply good food outdoors with family and friends.
Mallorca has endless picnic-perfect spots, from olive groves in autumn to blossom fields in spring. With the help of our friends at Picknicup, we’re exploring the island season by season, one picnic at a time.
Our first stop wasn’t planned. We meant to head for the hills, but the sun was warm, the sea too blue, and the promise of a peaceful off-season Es Trenc too tempting to resist.
Possibly Mallorca’s most famous beach, Es Trenc is known for its shallow turquoise water and long stretch of white sand backed by dunes. It’s beautiful in summer, but even more magical in the quiet months when the salt flats behind and endless sea in front make it feel like your own little desert island.

Arriving on an end-October Sunday around 11am, we found the Ses Salines car park almost empty. Parking is still paid (a flat 8 euros), but the short 100-metre walk to the sand makes it ideal for families with little ones or anyone juggling buckets and baskets.
Mornings are best here for that pure escapist feeling, but if you’re nearby later in the day, it’s also a dreamy spot to watch the sun melt into the sea. We arrived before lunch and set up between the dunes and the shoreline. Even as more families arrived, it still felt a world away from the summer crowds.

In October and into November, the water stays shallow and clear, perfect for paddling. The wide, stone-free beach is great for sandcastles, ball games and shell hunting, and with no nearby roads, it’s a relaxing space for parents and kids of all ages.
Thanks to our friends at Picknicup, our picnic was as delicious as the setting. Everything had been freshly prepared that morning and was ready to unpack and enjoy, with healthy, family-friendly food that everyone enjoyed.

Our favourites included:
🍌 Choco-banana oat pancakes
🍓 Fruit skewers (a big hit)
🥚 Mini tortillas (the clear favourite)
🍋 Fresh mint lemonade and orange juice
Each item came beautifully boxed, easy to carry, and refreshingly low on plastic. We packed ours into a basket for the beach, but the boxes fit neatly into a backpack for hikes too.
Picknicup also cater for private gatherings, from children’s parties to laid-back at home events, with the same fresh, seasonal ingredients and effortless presentation. All picnics are prepared on the day and available for collection from their kitchen in Portals or delivered directly to you.

If you have time after your picnic, there are some great family-friendly stops within a short drive:
Visit the Es Trenc Salt Factory
Take a short drive inland to the Flor de Sal d’Es Trenc salt pans, where you can learn how Mallorca’s famous sea salt is harvested on one of their tours. There’s a small shop selling salts, oils and local treats (the cafe is no longer operating). Open for tours seasonally.
A ten-minute drive away, Artestruz is an educational ostrich farm near Campos where kids can feed and learn about these fascinating birds up close. It’s family-run, full of character, and a great stop on your way back to Palma. Open year round.
