Son Serra de Marina isn’t your typical Mallorcan beach. It’s wild, windy and wonderfully low-key, with more empty sand than sunbeds and a refreshingly rural edge. It feels like another Mallorca altogether, far from the bustling resorts and picture-perfect coves the island is known for.
Set on the island’s northeast coast in the Santa Margalida region, between Can Picafort and Colònia de Sant Pere, families come here with surfboards, cool boxes and sandy-footed kids, happy to spend the day between the waves and the dunes.

Family Friendly Vibe
This is a beach where the sea has a mind of its own. Most days bring rolling waves, ideal for bodyboards and surfboards, although on windy days you’ll more often see kitesurfers skimming across the bay. A lifeguard watches over the main stretch in summer, and the red flag goes up when conditions are too rough. The sea floor is rocky in the shallows, so rock shoes are highly advised unless you are heading out to catch the big waves.
Even in August, Son Serra feels spacious. There are no hotels crowding the waterfront, just beach houses and a handful of restaurants that make it feel more like a local’s secret than a tourist hotspot.

Need to Know
- ⚠️ Currents and waves can be strong, so younger children – even strong swimmers – must be supervised at all times.
- The sea floor is rocky in the shallows (and the waves make getting in and out tricky), so rock shoes are highly advised.
- When the waves arrive, Kite boards and surf boards zoom through the waves so this is not a safe bet for swimming (head to Playa de Muro instead)
- A safety vest or swim support is recommended for little ones.
- A lifeguard patrols the main stretch in summer, but always check the red flag before swimming.
- Parking is free, easy and close to the beach.
- There is no natural shade or organised beach sunbeds with umbrellas, so bring a beach tent or sun umbrella (with wind support)
- There are toilets and a shower at the back of the Bach.
- The beach is not pushchair-friendly

Where to Eat
Eating out at Son Serra is as relaxed as the beach itself. All three restaurants are family-friendly with mostly outdoor seating, and each has a few tables inside for the occasional chilly or windy day.

- El Sol Restaurant & Bar – closest to the main beach and parking, with an L-shaped terrace overlooking the bay on both sides. Paella, authentic pizza, fresh salads and generous portions make it a reliable choice for a laid-back family lunch or early dinner. Kids menu available.
- Blue Tamarindo – a breezy terrace with views under the pines across the water, with Mediterranean meat & fish dishes plus fresh salads, pastas and more. A relaxed spot for a special meal by the sea.
- Moomba Beach Cafe – a barefoot beach-front bar set a 10-minute stroll along the seafront towards Son Real, serving smoothies, wraps, burgers and cocktails from late morning through sunset. Easygoing, fun and perfect for families.

Where to Stay
Son Serra keeps its laid-back feel by not having big hotels, but you will find the simple and family-run Apartments El Sol set just back from the beach with a few studios, small apartments and an easygoing atmosphere.
