Halloween in Mallorca brings plenty of frightening fun, but the island’s own version of supernatural celebration runs much deeper. While trick or treating, school parties and fancy-dress events grow more popular each year, the roots of the Balearic spooky season lie in Nit de les Ànimes, or Night of the Souls.
Nit de les Ànimes: Mallorca’s own Halloween
Nit de les Ànimes is an island tradition centred on remembrance: families light candles, visit cemeteries and share sweet treats in honour of loved ones. It begins on 31 October and continues through Tots Sants (All Saints’ Day, 1 November) into Tots els Difunts (All Souls’ Day, 2 November).
In the past, candles were placed inside bottles, seasonal fruit or hollowed-out pumpkins and set by the door, in the kitchen or on windowsills to help guide souls home.
Tots Sants on 1 November is still a day for family visits and traditional sweets: panellets (almond marzipan balls), bunyols (fritters) and rosari ensucrat, a sugar rosary strung with candied fruit, sweets and trinkets. Bakeries make them in the days around All Saints’ Day, so look out for rosaris hanging in the windows.
Island traditions now sit happily alongside evil-looking pumpkins, scary scenes and deathly costumes, giving Mallorca a Halloween that mixes local culture with plenty of family fun.

Calvià’s youth service stages an abandoned-circus scare trail aimed at teenagers. The 18h–19h session is for under-8s with an adult. Eight to 11-year-olds need an adult or signed authorisation. Last entry is 22h30.

Each year, local couple Cristina and Paco transform their garden into Mallorca’s most decorated Halloween home. Some displays are truly terrifying, with jump scares that may not suit young children or those prone to nightmares.

Trick or Treating
If you’re after some US-inspired door-knocking fun, you’ll find it here too, but it’s not common and you need to know where to go. The towns of Esporles and Sóller are known for family-friendly ‘truco o trato’ routes, with some residents decorating houses and handing out sweets. Around Palma, the neighbourhoods of Son Dureta and El Toro (southwest) both draw small crowds of sugar-searching school kids. As elsewhere in the world, only knock on doors with spooky decorations to invite you in.
Local and Free Events
Experience Halloween the island way by joining local festivities organised by town halls across Mallorca. In Alcúdia, the old town celebrates on 31 October. In Palma, Parc de Sa Riera usually hosts a full line-up with storytelling, live music and kids’ shows, and the municipal libraries run free children’s activities in the run-up.
Other villages usually run rosari workshops, lantern making, terror tunnels and face painting. Programmes tend to come out a week or two before, so check your local ajuntament’s website or social channels.
