The Route

A smooth 15-minute cycle along a slip-road cycle path takes you from Port d’Alcúdia to Albufera—a birdwatcher’s paradise. There is a dedicated cycle lane for much of the slip road, but this section requires steady, straight cycling and close supervision, making it best suited to confident cyclists aged 7+.

Inside the park, there are four itineraries, two of which are cycling-friendly. The first is a 12.5km route that skirts the perimeter of the park; the second is a shorter 1.5km trail. We opted for part of the longer route before looping back to enjoy the shorter trail at a more relaxed pace.

The Park

The park entrance is just off the road, down a clearly signposted gravel trail. On arrival, you pass the Visitor Centre, where you request a free entry pass and pick up a map before heading out on your chosen trail. Each route is well signposted and easy to follow.

Albufera is an important migratory stop for around 10,000 birds. Along the way, you might spot frogs, flamingos, turtles—or even a snake. We spotted flamingos, horses, and countless birds, and stopped at scenic lookout points along the cycle path. The Visitor Centre is well worth a quick visit for its impressive nature photography exhibit and local wildlife information.

There are no official picnic areas inside the park (to avoid litter) and no café. There is a drinks vending machine at the Visitor Centre, but if you’re cycling with younger children, it’s worth packing snacks to keep energy levels up—and you’ll definitely need plenty of water.

Cycle Rental

We hired our bikes from Wheelssport. They’ve been helping families explore Mallorca on two wheels for nearly four decades—and it shows.

There are other cycle rental companies closer to the park, but we go back to Wheelssport because they are Mallorcan-owned, the service is perfect, and we enjoy the smooth tarmac spin from Port d’Alcúdia to the park. Plus, they’re super convenient with:

  • bikes for everyone – from speedy road bikes to kids’ bikes, cargo e-bikes that carry two little ones, and even tricycles with kid carriers.
  • multi-lingual website – you can book online (or by email / phone) and they provide locks & helmets included with every rental. They’ll also deliver to your hotel or pick you up to collect your bike if you are staying nearby.
  • multiple locations – you can also rent bikes from their shops in Can Picafort and Port de Pollença

Top Tips

Best Time to Go: Spring is great for flamingo spotting (some only stay in the Park for the cooler months) and also for quieter road cycling

Be Aware: Albufera is a protected nature reserve—so keep voices low, and save ball games & running for the beach. No dogs allowed.

Lunch & Play: There are no cafés inside the park and picnics are not permitted. Pack snacks, bring plenty of water, and plan to enjoy lunch on the beach or back in the port afterwards.
